1835Soapworks - Soap

Living in North Texas in 1835, soap was made using animal fat and lye. You grew your own food and raised your own meat and dairy animals. Food and cleaning products were not filled with ingredients we cannot even pronounce.

Our soaps are not designed to be smelly, fragrance filled aromatherapy soaps. Our soaps are about skin care.

Helen and I source our grass fed beef tallow (fat) from the same local North Texas ranches we get our meats, eggs and dairy from. We know the owners, we know the cows and we know the lands. No feed lot cows for our soaps or food.

Tallow soap making is a labor of love. It takes two days to render and purify the beef fat to tallow. We make our soaps in small batches that produce 20 bars of soap. We do this to make sure the lye (food grade sodium hydroxide) and flowers/herbs are mixed completely. After the soap mixture sets in the soap molds for 24 hours, we then hand cut our soaps and let them cure for four weeks before they are ready to use.

In some of our soaps we’ve added dried flower or herbs; every time you wet the soap you make a beneficial tea for a holistic way of treating the skin.

Why tallow? You may ask.-Tallow is rich in vitamins A, B12, D, E and K.
-Tallow is rich in Oleic Acid: a known skin conditioner.
-Tallow contains a similar fat content to human skin, making it easy for our skin to absorb.
-Tallow is gentle on sensitive skin.
-Tallow has natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
